It shouldn't have been the fact he was asking in the evening that tipped you off, it should have been that he was ASKING, and asking for MONEY. The Thais wouldn't have believed for 2 seconds he was an actual monk.

Buddhist monks (and nuns, in case you happen to meet one of Thailands 7 nuns) must not ever ASK for anything.

It is also prohibited for them to handle money, although, given the widespread levels of corruption in the Thai monastic sangha (community) many do. Good monks won't take money if you give it to them.

And, for the record, monks may touch lady-boys, but not in a suggestive or sexual manner, i.e. no massages, or anything else, and nothing else which could have even the slightest possibility of being taken the wrong way. And seeming the risk of it being taken the wrong way is high with lady-boys, it's the kind of thing which is inadvisable.

Hi, there,

I'm sure you'll have a great time and make a lot of friends. I had no trouble in Shanghai or Beijing, and people in general were very kind. Bars at 4:00a can be troublesome in any part of the world, but I expect you'll wrestle more with the language than the locals.

Have fun in Beijing,
Robert

Hello bob!
I'm going to beijing for a whole year thanks to a scholarship I won some time ago, and I'm really concerned about racism out there. Have you had any other experiences like this? May I learn some kung-fu?
Also, I'm not white, are chinese people more aggresive against non white people? (I'm latino).
Btw, nice blog!, adding you to my rss.

I decided fluency in language is when you can successfully complete a Newspaper Crossword puzzle in that language.

Unfortunately by this defination I am not yet fluent in English or any language.

Expect to be charged the wrong amount 9 times out of 10 in Shanghai. This is the norm. if you get a bill for the correct amount be pleasantly surprised.
